Lula Elzy, a native of New Orleans, a distinguished choreographer, director, educator and accomplished modern dancer. She is the founder and artistic director of the Lula Elzy New Orleans Dance Theatre; Ms. Elzy toured national and internationally. Studied at Jacob’s Pillow, The Alvin Aliley American Dance Center, Dance Space and Nat Horne Musical Theatre in New York. Among her many awards Ms. Elzy is the recipient of the Disney Channel American Teacher Award and the Presidential Scholars Distinguished Teachers Award in the Performing Arts. Other honors bestowed on Elzy include a Kennedy Center for the Arts Artist/Teacher Fellowship and inclusion in Mirabella magazine’s “1,000 Most Influential Women in America.” She was selected as one of the New Orleans Public School Teachers of the Year, received the New Orleans Mayor’s Arts Award, Dayton Choreographers Award, Delta Sigma Theta Award in the Arts, Dance Fellowship Awards from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation and the Louisiana Division of the Arts, and Choreographers Choice Award given by the Dallas Black Dance Theatre. Presently she teaches special dance workshops at the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, and is Resident choreographer for the Muse Machine in Dayton, Ohio Ms. Elzy Enthusiastically promoting dance traditions from all world cultures, she is in constant demand as a choreographer and instructor. Her unique approach to dancers, choreography and rehearsal techniques enables her to connect, be effective and earn admiration from dancers of all ages.
